POL224Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Failed State, England In The Middle Ages
Document Summary
The idea of a state has arisen from the idea that humans aren"t free; people could not pursue the livelihoods they truly desired. Game theory is a useful theory for hypothetical scenarios. Theory can be illustrated by an example: one person (person a) opts to work for their livelihood, while another (person b) opts to steal for their livelihood, four potential outcomes can occur: Game theory thus dictates that this scenario seeks to achieve a nash/cournot equilibrium, where circumstances successfully deter either party from deviating from their existing strategies. Case of state collapse: somalia from 1991-2014. Failed state = a region where a centralized state fails to materialize and/or an existing state utterly collapses: this absence of centralized authority leads to an assured loss of order and ever- growing chaos. Since not all people are equally wealthy and/or reputable, a state may not be able to enforce laws upon its citizens equally: case: medieval england.
