Global Governance Promise and Challenges Globalization: world much smaller place… Global governance and the international system: -anarchic international system – realism (we somehow seem to acheve order without an authority, global governance) , how much power does your country posses relative to others. Conflict prone international system, how we manage international system, balance, peace. Or they think we need a hegemon. -League of Nations and collective security: doctrine of collective security, we live in an anarchic international system, sovereignty is important,  threat of threat of punishment promotes relative peace and prosperity. -Neoliberal institutionalism: not necessarily peaceful, believe we live in an anarchic international system, no such think a world gov, also believe in interdependence, as long as eco intertwined with one another promotes security and stability  Interdependence: by not cooperating  loose  Positive sum  Functionalism: need to create rules  Rules and norms -International organizations and regimes European monetary system Rules part of the euro zone need to demonstrate that no high debts… UN system of states: not a world government, but closest thing to it. -To maintain international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace… -To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples..; -to achieve international co-operation in solving international problems of an eco, social, cultural, or humanitarian character -to be center for harmonizing the actions of nations in the attainment of these common ends. (UN charter, chap 1, article 1) Global Risks: UN of states: something we all want to believe in… We are experiencing them as new global risks We live in a risk society, tremendous uncertainty, and global uncertainty -Collective/ commons (climate change), as a nation, we might have good climate, we will be affected by neighbors bad climate. -Borderless world (global health): disease -uncertainty (technology): cyber security -human security (genocide)  New Global risks and global governance: new forms of global governance because we are facing new kinds of global risks.
