September 26 2017, Lecture #3 • Labour • Progressives • CCF/NDP • Social Credit • Reconstruction • Communist • Bloc Populaire • Ralliement des creditistes • Reform • Bloc Quebecois • Green • Most British colonies have a FPTP system • The CCF is still around • Social credit 4 or 5 decades • Had 3 parties since 1921 o did not want to be opposition o did not like the way parliament was working – reason for creation o wanted no party discipline o gone by late 20s • WL Morton reading – farmers were upset that the liberals did not lower tariffs as rd promisrd – hence creation of the 3 party • Had 3 ever since • Many minority governments o 1/3 elections lead to minority governments o coalition governments form – not usual to Canada (on the federal level) • currently have 5 parties in the HOC • 1945 – had 6 parties – bloc populaire (communist was elected) • support for 3 parties – in the 60s they had an average of 25% of the vote • went up to 41% and in 2006 and 200
