The last layer of gi wall which is the serosa which is outer most layer of gi wall mainly composed of connective tissue. =connective tissue underlying mucous membrane contains small blood vessels, nerves and lymph vessels muscularis mucosae, layer of smooth muscle where contraction of smooth muscles results in contraction of the mucosa into folds which functions in mixing of luminal contents. Submucosa: underlying connective tissue thick layer of connective tissue that provides distensibility and elasticity to allows stretch and bend this layer also has nerve cells known as the submucosal plexus which is part of enteric nervous system. Muscularis externa layer of smooth muscle responsible for motility of the gi tract and also contains the myenteric plexus which is the second part of enteric nervous system. Serosa outer most layer of the gi wall and is mainly composed of connective tissue.
