Document Summary

Instead of looking at neuron-neuron connection, where the input comes from presynaptic neurons and postsynaptic neuron receives the input, we will remove the presynaptic neuron and instead we will look at receptor potential. Input is no longer coming from the presynaptic neuron, but the exterior environment in forms of energy (i. e. photons, sound waves). Receptor potential is almost the same as postsynaptic potential. Very similar to ionotropic receptors: enzyme is activated via g-protein coupling leading to production of 2nd messenger (camp, cgmp, inp3) lots of 2nd messengers amplifying the signal. Post-synaptic receptors: chemical stimulus (not a neurotransmitter) binds to specific metabotropic receptor (g- protein coupled) activation of g protein activate adjacent enzyme (adenylate cyclase) Olfactory receptor: specific receptor proteins bind specific odorant, sensory proteins are embedded in the membrane, olfactory neurons send out projections into nasal cavity but these olfactory neurons have finger-like projections that line the epithelium inside the nasal passage.
