Document Summary
Mtcc, toronto on - june 9-12, 2018 www. isa2018. org. Cv disease is the leading cause of deaths worldwide. Mostly due to problems in circulation of lipids. Ldl with apo-b causes accumulation in the blood vessels, leading to clogging. Smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, untreated hypertension and cholesterol, stress. Younger ages are being exposed greatly to cvd risk factors. Build-up of fatty material (plaque), mainly cholesterol --> ldl, on the under lining of the arteries. Plaque can cause thrombus (blood clot) to form on the walls. Reduces the radius of the vessel and reduces blood flow. Can be stable or unstable --> whether or not it stays in place. Can dislodge and circulate as a large clot (thromboembolism) Somehow, ldl makes its way underneath the lamina. This invasion recruits macrophages to try to digest away the lipids. As macrophages digest, they start to transmute lipids to oxidative lipids. This is because of the oxidative processes in the macrophages.
