Once an antigen activates t & b cells clonal expansion: clonal expansion: specific cell w/ matching antibody to antigen replicates many times. Clonal expansion creates effectors (do job & die), and memory cells (have the ability to perform clonal expansion again in future) Primary response (first time encountering antigen: peak antibody response @ 2 weeks, few days before detecting any increase in antibody levels. Secondary response (body has memory of antigen: peak antibody response much larger, faster response (during week 0 = detectable antibody levels) Cells mature in the thymus (t-cells) & bone marrow (b-cells: hematopoiesis occurs in bone marrow originate in bone marrow, mature elsewhere. During maturation, cells undergo positive & negative selection: positive selection: cells can detect mhc, negative selection: cell is self-reacting killed. Structure: have a characteristic structure y-shaped, 4 polypeptide chains, 2 heavy chains, 2 light chains, joined by disulphide bonds, variable region (fab region) variable shape, conserved region (fc region)
