Document Summary

Major classes: interferons ( ,(cid:533), (cid:534), complement (c-) , (cid:533): inhibit viral replication (cid:534): stimulate immune cells circulate plasma in inactive form. 3 activation pathways: classical pathway, antibody pathogen complex signals c1, c1 triggers cascade activates c3, lectin pathway, complement detects polysaccharide signals c3, alternative pathway, detects microbe surface signals c3, microbe surface contains no inhibitors. Complement pathways cleave the downstream protein to activate, or add together to form the functional enzyme. Vasodilaton redness, heat, swelling: with vasodilation, comes blood leaking out of capillaries. Functions: slow the spread of pathogens, mobilization of defense mechanisms, starts repair process. Inflammation: damage to tissue, chemical change in interstitial fluids, mast cells release histamine & heparin, dilation of blood vessels & increase vessel permeability, inflammation & clot formation, attracts phagocytes (esp. neutrophils, debris removal, stimulation of repair. Regular body temperature: higher than 37. 2 celcius.
