Document Summary

What does the kidney do: maintains normal volume and composition of body fluid compartments, excretes waste products from the body, helps maintain blood pressure, hemoglobin levels and calcium levels ( big impact on bones) through hormone secretion. Kidney maintains: normal blood concentration of ions and water by balancing intake of those substances with their excretion in urine ( mass balance, homeostatic regulation of water and ion content of the blood. Kidney function: regulation of ecf volume and bp, when ecf vol decreases, bp decreases, regulation of osmolarity, maintenance of ion balance, production of hormones ( epo, renin, homeostatic regulation of ph. Too acidic (remove h+), too alkaline (remove hco3-: excretion of wastes. Remove drugs environmental toxins, creatinine from muscle metabolism, urea and uric acid. Muscle atrophy causes ppl to be smaller hence less water. Healthy higher tbw ( more muscle, less fat= lean ppl) Thus exercise a lot before a marathon to get enough muscle ( water content)
