Document Summary
Psy100 - lecture 20 - approaches to therapy. The elephant metaphor of how we function was created by chip and dan heath. This system has a lot to do with physiological processes. It"s vital to be calm to control this system. You can use frames to reset the emotional system. You can resist powers of the situation and act autonomously (as a function of the emotional system) However, if you are not calm, your elephant will charge in one direction, determined by the path (context, power of situation). Mediating step: the step between context and action, which determines what route of action we take in reposes to the context. If you step out of context, you can have a eureka moment like in the milgram study, where the students could have realized that the experimenter shouldn"t have so much control over them. The inability to step out of the context has been linked to eating behaviours.
