Lecture 7 Notes
- Thurstone found 7 factors related to intelligence:
1. Verbal comprehension
2. Verbal fluency
3. Number
4. spatial visualization
5. Memory
6. Reasoning
7. Perceptual speed
- But when a factor analysis was performed on Thurstone’s factors, Cattell found that two factors
underlie the 7 factors
o Fluid intelligence = ability to see relations and patterns (being able to rotate images
visually, being able to hold a lot of things in memory, being able to solve things quickly)
o Crystallized intelligence = accumulated life knowledge (what experience gives you,
having a growing vocabulary)
- Howard Gardner has a theory on intelligence that is not based on factor analysis his theory is
known as a neuropsychological theory of intelligence
o Deals with situations where there may be brain damage
o He came up with 8 factors of intelligence
o In the school system it is the most used learning theory
1. Logical-mathematical
2. Linguistics
3. Spatial
4. Naturalist
5. Musical
6. Bodily-kinesthetic
7. Intrapersonal awareness
8. Interpersonal awareness
- One of the most enduring controversy in psychology is whether intelligence is mostly influenced
by heredity or by environmental influences (nature vs. nurture)
- Most estimates of heritability of IQ hover around 50%
- This does not mean that 50% of intelligence is based on genes, but that 50% of variability in
intelligence is related to variability in genetic make-up
- The heritability index tends to increase from childhood to adolescence, presumably because
children are under tighter control from parents and other authority figures than adolescents and
adults.

Document Summary

Thurstone found 7 factors related to intelligence: verbal comprehension, verbal fluency, number, spatial visualization, memory, reasoning, perceptual speed. In the school system it is the most used learning theory: logical-mathematical, linguistics, spatial, naturalist, musical, bodily-kinesthetic. One of the most enduring controversy in psychology is whether intelligence is mostly influenced by heredity or by environmental influences (nature vs. nurture) Most estimates of heritability of iq hover around 50% This does not mean that 50% of intelligence is based on genes, but that 50% of variability in intelligence is related to variability in genetic make-up.
