However, when they were told the patterns they were to listen for, they were able to identify it. Hence, they use top-down processing to perceive specific phrases. If they were not given any directions and just listened to the music backward and tired to detect message based on different sound, they were engaged in bottom-up processing. Learning: a process by which behavior changes as a result of experience. Early 1900s - a resistance to the dominant paradigms in psychology of the day: So psychologists started to try to make psychology more scientific and experimental by focusing on observable aspects of human experiences (behavior). Unconditioned stimulus: meat powder unconditioned response: salivation. Neural stimulus: bell (pairs with) unconditioned stimulus: meat powder .
