To motivate a person one needs to figure out where the motivations come from. At one end of the continuum there is external regulation (extrinsic) which includes rewards, punishments, command, social pressures. Extrinsic is very powerful, yet very fleeting. As soon as the system is taken away, the motivation is taken away. Motivation which comes from external feedback, then the motivation goes away. It is partial internalization of reward/punishment; contingent self-esteem, ego-involvement. It"s when you take your external regulation and you tie your self-esteem to it (going to school and liking it since you are smart). You are vulnerable to the feedback you get. It is hard to push through setbacks and challenges so as to see the future goods. Identified (does it fit) and integrated (identity) regulation the extent of your motivations that do with you ethics. You do things because you believe in them. People persevere since they believe in the cause.
