Psy100 lecture 4: january 30, 2012: depressants: decrease activity of cns. When doses are low: relaxation, mood elevation, increased talkativeness,lowers inhibition impairs judgement. Sedation: when doses are higher, slows thinking, impairs concentration, walking, muscular coordination. Tolerance: reduction in effect of drug as a result of repeated use requires greater quantities to achieve same effect. Unpleasant effects of reducing/stopping consumption of a drug that users had consumed habitually: stimulants: Increase activity of the cns, including heart rate, respiration, blood pressure. Ex: caffeine, nicotine (extremely addictive, acts as an acetylcholine agonist- sticks to acetylcholine receptors and acts like acetylcholine, induces feelings of stimulation. Ex: cocaine euphoria, enhanced mental/physical capacity, stimulation, decrease in hunger, indifference to pain, sense of well-being and confidence, decreased fatigue, powerful reinforcer, dopamine agonist can lead to paranoia, psychotic behaviour, violence. Occasional use- to postpone fatigue, elevate mood, lose weight. Depletion of dopamine levels: opiates/narcotics relieve pain, induce sleep. Heroin: similar action to morphine, but much more powerful.
