Psychology Lecture 16 November 10
Motivation
-Motivation can be used as a tool to get people to do things
-Goals play a huge part in motivation
-Top-down processes (meaning, interpretation) play a huge role in how our motivational
systems work
Step 1:
-Set a goal for yourself – something you would like to accomplish over the school year
oMy goal: 3.5 GPA in all courses
-Why do we always set the same goals, year after year?
-We need more self-discipline!
-Motivation exists deep within the person
Intrinsic motivation: coming from within yourself. Doing for the sake of doing. Tendency to
seek out novelty and challenges
Extrinsic motivation: outside of yourself (conditioning)
-Find out what you love to do and find a way to get paid for it
-Intrinsic motivation is self-directed and self-sustaining leads to greater success
Step 2:
-Own the goal
-Why did you choose this goal?
-Why is it impor tant?
-Asking these questions helps you become more aware of deeper meanings of the goal
Step 3:
-Self-Efficacy” I think I can…
-Hope
-Optimism
-Belief
-Sub-goals make t hem specific
Step 4:
-Relatedness:
-Talk to others about your goal make a commitment to someone
