Not testing on historical stuff that precede that info. Characteristics have some degree of cross-situation stability. Brought study of personality into main field. E. g. , defense mechanisms, repression, freudian slips, dream interpretation. The ego has many strategies at its disposal to help it explain behaviour or events. Cognitive dissonance: these types of ego-defenses were explored in this powerful theory. Can tell us how behaviour can affect thinking and vice versa. E. g. , festinger and carlsmith dissonance study vs. - boring task. If ppl don"t have a good extrinsic reason for lying, they will intrinsically make something up to constitute for their cognitive dissonance. To get people to like you, get them to do a favour for you.
