(transition from operant way of thinking to understanding importance of meaning construction cognitive revolution: need to get something out of task itself, or motivation will fail. Becomes introjective motivation system (self-esteem becomes based on marks) 1973- markers + good player award: one condition: get rewarded, other doesn"t (control, kids given award played less with markers afterwards relative to kids w/o awards (changed meaning of play activity itself) diminishes intrinsic joy. Kids like vegetables when young (fine if leave them alone) shouldn"t reward kid for eating: will hitch emotional system to food (like using it as coping mechanism) We have natural propensity towards challenge, etc. Just don"t mess with it people naturally flourish. Healthy development (see ryan & deci & self-determination theory)
