Document Summary

Schneider & shiffrin (1977): automatic processes: occur outside of awareness, occur without intention (or, given an intention to begin, carry on without intention) are efficient (in terms of cognitive resources) Can be carried out under heavy cognitive load because automatized actions become efficient, don"t require much cognitive processes. Bargh (1990): many activities start out controlled, but become automatized with practice. Freud thinks a lot of things we think are unconscious because they"re suppressed desires. For bargh, we"re not repressing action (driving), becomes automatized for mundane reasons, we don"t need to think about it too much. Like programs that don"t take up much ram in computer. https://implicit. harvard. edu/implicit/ middle picture/word cycles between positive and negative and black/white. Participants have to categorize each word according to categories on side of screen. We"re faster to categorize info on screen if it"s consistent with your preference. Ex: if prefer coke over pepsi, faster to categorize positive word (puppy) when pepsi is on the screen.
