PSY220H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Relational Aggression, Ostracism, Intermittent Explosive Disorder
Document Summary
Biased assimilation and violent video games (greitemeyer, 2014) Those who came into the study thinking violent video games increase aggression polarized their views. Aggression: behaviour intended to harm another individual. Emotional or hostile aggression: inflicting harm for its own sake. The aggressive act itself is the end point. Instrumental aggression:inflicting harm in order to obtain something of value. The aggressive act is the means to some end. Ex: insulting someone behind their back, trying to harm the social connection/relationships of that individual (ex: ostracizing someone from your group, trying to damage someone"s reputation, etc) Retaliation almost always exceeds the original offense (e. g. , is more extreme or painful) Pain is a lot more intense when inflicted on us than pain inflicted on someone else. Benefits of aggression: more resources (e. g. , land, food), more respect & acceptance (higher status), & more mates (which means more offspring!) When looking at physical aggression, males tend to engage in physical aggression than females.
