Group: collection of persons who are perceived to be bonded together in a coherent unit (entiativity) to some degree. Status- you"re position within the group of that group. Norms- rules within a group that indicate how we should behave as members. Groups ~benefits and costs of joining: tell us what kind of people we are, what kinds of things we value. Boost one"s status: being included in a prestigious group. Accomplish social change: help minority groups against prejudice. Group formation survival advantage: more access to mates, food, rely on others for protection when there is threat. Membership often limits personal freedom: take up time cannot do things when you want. Groups make demands on members that must be met: sometimes groups ask for money compensation (some churches)
