Psychology Lecture Notes
Lecture 12
-Rogers: there are diseased models of psychopathology, sometimes
considered an illness
-Symptom constellation of schizophrenia can be produced by damage to
specific parts of the brain
-During depression: we know that serotonin levels drop, and its
consequences, but is this an illness?
oEx. Primate at bottom of hierarchy is stressed, may develop
ulcers, does this consitute illness?
oWhat an illness is is not clear, mental illness is obscure
subcategory of a category thats already obscure
-A criminal is low in agreeable and conscientiousness
-Illness is multidimensional; has to do with current state of function
and surrounding community
-Multiple personality disorder: has cycled historically for 400 years. No
one hears anything about it, people forget it exists, and one case is
reported, then ten cases, keeps increasinguntil people think they are
contrived and phony, then people forget about it again
oSchizophrenia is a fragmented personality, not multiple
personalities.
-When Freud was alive, there were many female hysterics: this doesnt
happen anymore, people starting to doubt if they even existed in
Freuds time
-Dont except an illness to be culturally malleable
oDifficult to determine what causes undesirable states of being
-Rogers believed deceit and lying caused undesirable state of beings
oEasiest way to encourage the development of psychological
illness you are most predisposed to develop is to surround
yourself with family members who lie to you
-Ex. In relationship, person betrays the trust, this means you are not in
the dominance hierarchy you thought you were in, you are broken by
such thing: serotonin levels drop and cortisol rises
oOf all biological systems are prone to stress disorders
-Even in medical models: there is dawning awareness that stress can
increase probability of manifestation of any number of diseases
-Disorder rate is higher when dominance hierarchy is steep
oStatus conflict: if its hard to climb up dominance hierarchy; they
get touchy and aggressive because their path is blocked
-Sociological causes of illness: obesity, mental health rates
www.notesolution.com
oPart of the brain responsible for assessing status: extremely old
oStatus regulates mental health, status is important, there is 1:1
correspondence between position and stability of nervous system
-Rogers is onto something in terms of his association between deception
and deceit and development of mental health problems:
oLying or deceiving anyone who is mentally ill is damaging, they
can barely cope with reality as it is
oThe poor and unclear and vague communication that exists
between people (subtle deceit) and outright deceit is strong
contributor to mental de-stability
-What makes a country poor?
oLack of natural resources, Japan has none but is very rich.
Russia has tons of resources but they are poor.
oIf poor disorganized country finds valuable resource, economic
state will decline
oCorruption makes nations poor
Difficult to get a place to be rich if people cant trust each
other on one-to-one acts of trading
Honesty makes wealth instantly
Frozen capitol: most people have a lot of it (things we
dont use but are still valuable)
When eBay started up, these companies (escro companies
guarantee trade for exchange its insurance, adds
transaction fee)
Every purchase was straight-forward. Default position of
eBay users was honesty, dont screw your customer
eBay produced 120 billion dollars of capitol
People are complicated and treacherous
Myth: Human beings are made from blood of worst
demon; Nothing in nature can deceive you except a
human being
People have unlimited capacity for devious and twisted
behaviour
-Interaction becomes too complicated, must be paranoid because always
worried about deceit, but be prepared for the worst from everyone all
the time
-Book: Infidel (about escaping from an arranged marriage)
oWrote about two things that stunned her. In Amsterdam: clocks
on bus station, which accurately determined when it would show
up, also, police would actually help you. Where she was from,
bus never showed up and police obeyed tyrants wishes. Honesty
