Personality
personality: all the ways we have of acting, thinking and believing and feelings that make each of
us unique
personality trait: complex pattern of behaviour thoughts, and feelings that is stable across time
Defining and Diagnosing Personality Disorders
personality disorder
long standing patten of maladaptive thoughts, behaviours and feelings
must have shown symptoms since adolescence to early adulthood
placed in axis II of DSM but usually it is comorbid with a axis I disorder
cluster A: Odd-Eccentric Personality Disorder
symptoms like schizophrenia but they maintain grasp on reality
cluster B: Dramatic-Emotional Personality Disorders
tend to be volatile, manipulative, and uncaring in social relationships
cluster C: Anxious-Fearful Personality Disorder
little self confidence and have difficult relationship with others
Problems with DSM categories

Gender and Ethnic Biases in Construction and Application
clinicians may be quick to apply labels of:
cluster A disorders to women b/c the symptoms are flamboyant behaviour, emotionality, and
dependence on others is just a extreme stereotype of women
cluster B disorders to men b/c the symptoms are violent, hostile, overcontrolling behaviour is an
extreme of stereotype of men
antisocial, and paranoid diagnosis for African American b/c they perceive violence and hostility
Odd-Eccentric Personality Disorder

mistrust of others
often notice little details no one else notices such as grimacing of the face and they spend great deal
of time trying to decipher these clues about other people's intentions
0.5-5.6 prevalence rate
male:female = 3:1

Schizoid Personality Disorder
lack desire to form relationships and are emotionally cold in interaction with others
rare disorder, prevalence rate: 0.4-1.7%
