Addicion: strong habit or compulsion that is maintained despite known harmful consequences: excludes cofee, meatonin, etc. because they don"t impact life negaively. Illicit drugs that are considered addicive heroine, cocaine, marijuana. Amphetamine, etc: development is a large factor in who uses illicit drugs: adolescents are the largest group, some develop pathological addiion, but many fade, reason: Nature or nurture: are you born with an addicive personality or do life events make it inevitable that you will try/become addicted to drugs, combinaion of both, rehab centres now focus more on environment. Historically: freud and william james have both endorsed drug research, freud: coca treatment of syphilis, reduce faigue, james: nitrous-oxide-gas-intoxicaion helped him understand diicult ideas. Afects nmda receptors: arguments for using drugs in surgery, denistry, etc. Drug use starts from social learning: peer pressure, simulus enhancement, imitaion, etc: ex: children who do drugs have parents who do drugs. Addicion needs compulsion; factors that contribute to it: reinforcement, tolerance, withdrawal.
