Document Summary
Definitional approach we look at an object and ask ourselves if that object fits the definition of a certain category (beak, neck i. e. the definition of this object is that it has this this and this feature). However this does not work in reality because sometimes the object does not quite fit the definition and yet it belongs to that category (like a beanbag chair or an ostrich). That is the problem of the definitional approach, the idea of family resemblance members of all have overlapping features but they are not all identical (leaves room for variation) Prototype approach we look at an object and decide if it fits the category by comparing the object to a prototype that represents the category. A prototype is a the average member of the category, but this prototype doesn"t actually exist in real life.
