Document Summary

Displacement: the idea that we can use language to talk about things in their physical absence. If you souza talks about his kids and we can understand what he"s talking about. Talking about something that is not physically present in the environment but he can still communicate those ideas in a such a way that we know what he"s talking about. Something doesn"t have to be right in front of us to talk about it or think about it. Arbitrariness: random, relationship between sounds and concept they refer too are arbitrary. Money has a certain meaning to it, but in spanish, it sounds like something different. There is no reason for the sounds that make up the word, that correspond to money. It happens to be the case that in a culture, a set of sounds correspond to an idea like money. We can use any sounds we want to correspond to any idea we want.
