Document Summary
Experiment schneider & shifrin: target search: consistent mapping: target always a number, and distractors always leters. Easier, eventually the search becomes automaic: variable mapping: target now a leter, Target could have been a previous distractor, previous target could be a current distractor. Task is diicult, and eventually plateaus over number of trials; never reaches the same accuracy as consistent mapping: tasks that are cogniively demanding may never become automaic always require some form of controlled processing. Highway blindness: when you drive down the highway with no traic, your mind starts to shut of: driving becomes automaic over ime and pracice, start to lose focus and cogniive efort, experiment: cellphone while driving. Miss more red lights when driving with a cell phone because calling eats up cogniive resources. Same efect with hands-free calling; worse with texing: front-seat passenger has no signiicant adverse efect because passenger is atending to road condiion as well. Conversaion naturally decline at cogniively demanding zones.
