Document Summary

Extrastriate cortex: region of cortex bordering the primary visual cortex and containing multiple areas involved in visual p. Receptive fields for extrastriate area cells more sophisticated than v1 cells. Moving from v1 to it in the what pathway, neurons respond to more and more complex stimuli. V4 cells interested in fans, spirals, and pinwheels. After extrastriate cortex, object information processing is split into what and where pathways. What pathway concerned more with names and functions of objects. Where pathway concerned more with locations and shapes of objects. Inferotemporal (it) cortex: lower portion of the temporal lobe, part of the what pathway. Do respond objects: tools, vehicles, animals, body parts, faces, etc. Some areas of human cortex prefer (i. e. , respond more to) certain types of stimuli. Fusiform face area (ffa): responds to faces more than other objects. Parahippocampal place area (ppa): responds preferentially to places, such as pictures of houses or landscapes.
