PSY312H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Mental Representation, Object Permanence, Habituation
Document Summary
Piaget tends to underestimate how young children can be when planning. Tends to think of the mind as monolithic. Still face situation: problem is its almost always a novel stimulus for the child, so the reaction is not conditioned. He was looking whether the child would engage in behaviour that would make the mother smile (they do) It is top down creating an intentional action to garner a smile from the mother. Still face situation may not exactly be planning - no linking of schemas - just one unified action. This predates what piaget was saying because legestree has results at 6 months of age. The child is not bottom up reacting. You do(cid:374)"t see(cid:373) to get a clear separatio(cid:374) of (cid:373)ea(cid:374)s fro(cid:373) e(cid:374)ds. Means link to other means which links to a goal. Piaget"s model is bottom up - very empiricist way of thinking.
