Document Summary

We all have finite cognitive resources => so we use mental, schemas, habits, categories to facilitate the automatic process (shortcuts) This frees up our cog resources so we can use them elsewhere, to make them more inline with our other goals. => allows us to navigate a complex world with some efficiency. Default mode= automatic processing => assimilate info to fit in with our expectations and perceived knowledge => make decisions quickly. Good: apply info about categories learned from past experience. Figure out whts good to approach and whats good to avoid (evaluative) Beliefs about members of the category could be wrong (misinformation = misinformed guidance of behaviour) Homogenize our behaviour towards all members of the category. Social categorization: attitudes towards perceived groups in society. But again look at the short comings listed above. Espcially when category is perceived but in actuality is not real. Since automatic, our perception is informed by these automatic social categorizations (filtering)
