Document Summary

Student and police both did a statement test on the false confession. Student performed better than by chance with 58% accuracy rate, but police performed only with 48% accuracy rate. But police detectives are more confident on their judgement. Police training: interrogators are trained to read verbal and non-verbal behaviour as a means of determining whether or not a suspect is lying. But those behaviour training are taught to focus on crossing legs, shifting and fidgeting, grooming gestures and avoiding eye contact as flawed indicators of deception. Stereotype threat is the anxiety or concern a person experience when he or she is at risk of confirming a negative stereotype about their social group. This resulted in behaviour consequences that are opposite to one"s intentions, thereby increasing the likelihood of confirming the undesired stereotype. Some theory believe that the stereotype threat and deception produce similar reaction in individuals such as arousal, self-regulation, and heightened cognitive load.
