Lecture 4 Chapter 2 ➢ Historical Roots (continued)  Diagram  Very beginning = just research papers  Next, organizations = professional interaction  Next, journals CHAPTER 2 ➢ TYPES OF BEHAVIOURASSESSMENT  Direct  Observation & recording of target behaviour in vivo  Most accurate (100% almost)  Indirect  3 party measuring behaviour • interviews • questionnaires • rating scales  Disadvantages • People could lie • Faulty memory ➢ RECORDING BEHAVIOUR  1) DEFINE THE TARGET BEHAVIOUR  2) IDENTIFYWHO, WHEN,AND WHERE TO RECORD (THE LOGISTICS OF RECORDING)  Requires close proximity → either in person or video recording  Target behaviours are typically recorded by someone else  Observation period → when the target behaviour is most likely to occurr  Consent must be obtained first (either from client or parent)  Can occur in a natural setting OR contrived setting • There are benefits to both  Structured observation vs. Unstructured observation (contrived settings)  3) CHOOSEARECORDING METHOD  Continuous Recording • Can measure 1 or more of the physical dimensions → frequency, duration, intensity. • Measuring from beginning of behaviour till end • Recording w/o interruption • Latency → time btwn a given stimulus and the onset of a target behaviour • identifying a change in the latency period could indicate whether the treatment was effective or not.  Percentage of Opportunites • Occurrence of a behaviour is recorded in relation to some other event (e.g. Response opportunity) • E.g. You measure the behaviour only when requests are given out.  Product Recording • The product is important • Indirect approach • Useful when there are tangible outcomes to a given behaviour • E.g. Atest or worksheets  Interval Recording • You can choose any interval • PartialApproach • You just want to know if the behaviour occurred during the interval • The frequency doesn't matter • Duration doesn't matter • Whole Interval • Good for duration • You want to know if behaviour occurred for the entire interval • Continuous behaviour → reading • You only place a mark in the interval if the behaviour occurred for the entire interval. If it didn't you don't place a mark • Usually used
