Document Summary

Attention is the second fundamental insight of psychology. Knowledge is passed to us through neural communication. Brain is an incredibly intricate network of neurons analogous to a culture which is a network of people. Those neurons communicate and form larger patterns and structures, much like our culture communicates and forms institutions and systems of meaning. When neurons release their electro-chemical messages to other neurons, an association begins to form between them (much like a relationship forms between two people when they talk to each other). The more they communicate, the stronger the association gets, until it becomes virtually automatic and instantaneous (much like how we build relationships with others, and share private jokes with our friends). Our neural conversations (i. e. , concepts) are interconnected because they reflect the patterns in the external environment. We grow up in an environment that is patterned, and these patterns have some meaning and regularity.
