Lecture 10 notes Piaget’s Preoperational Period - Age 2 to 7 - A tremendous increase in symbolic (representational) thought - Language is the most flexible means of symbolic representation - Numbers are even more obviously symbolic - Before a child has mastered operational thinking (when they can imagine things in their mind) - There are important limitations in this stage: Inability to conserve and egocentric o They have a hard time seeing things from over people’s perspective o They do not realize that certain physical characteristics of objects remain the same even when their appearance changes o Very rigid ideas o Irreversibility – unable to reverse operations in their minds o Unable to think about more than one aspect at a time Concrete Operational Period - Age 7 – 11 - Able to master some mental ope
