Developmental psychology focuses on the physiological, cognitive, and social changes that occur in individuals across the lifespan. Present at birth five senses - sight, smell, sound, taste, touch reflexes: grasping rooting, grasp side of baby"s cheek and it will turn it"s face to find nipple, sucking. Attachment: strong, emotional connection that persists over time and across circumstances: adaptive - encourages proximity between child and mother role of oxytocin. Attachment in rhesus monkeys (harry harlow, 1959: mom as milk vs. mom as comfort results contradicted the behaviorist perspective and had widespread societal implications. Mary ainsworth"s strange-situation test: secure attachment, upset when caregiver leaves, but easily comforted upon their return, approx. 65% of children insecure-resistant (anxious-ambivalent: clings to caregiver, gets upset, resists comfort (ex. may act mad) insecure-avoidant (anxious-avoidant) little distress when caregiver leaves, avoids caregiver upon their return, disorganized attachment, added later, inconsistent, odd behaviours.
