Document Summary
Focus on biological causes, views mental illness as a brain disease . Certainly an improvement from many other models (supernatural, ex: possessed by demons) Implies that it is not the fault of the person, which is important; but doesn"t necessarily reduce stigma or discrimination. People with psychological disorders are often violent and dangerous. People with psychological disorders behave in bizarre ways and are very different from normal people. Assessment involves examining a person"s mental state in order to diagnose (and treat) possible psychological disorders. There is no sharp line between normal and abnormal behavior. Criteria psychologists use to determine whether someone"s behavior is normal/abnormal. Preventing the person from doing something that they want and living their life how they wish to ,such as simply going going to classes or maintaining a job/romantic relationship. Behavior must interfere with at least one important aspect of the person"s life. Our understanding of abnormal behavior and mental illness is also constantly evolving.
