In cbt -- it"s not the event that matters, but the appraisal. Situation happens, but our automatic reactions are different. Events - > cognitive appraisal -> emotion -> behaviour -- all interacting. The goal of cognitive therapy is to change cognitions and images. Whats" really important are the beliefs and schemas people develop about the sel f and the world early on. Those beliefs form the vulnerability for becoming depressed later on. The idea is to disrupt negative thoughts but also get to the basic schemas (lens es) about the world. 1. beliefs about power and inadequacy - autonomy related vulnerability - i can"t achieve - failure and incompetent: interpersonal vulnerability - i"m not liked, i"m not lovable. When these beliefs develop, people develop strategies to overcome these vulnerab ilites.
