Document Summary

One of the characteristics of the synoptics is that there is a great deal of overlap. Mark; 666 verses; only 30 are unparalleled in matthew or luke. Triple tradition: the material that mark, matthew and luke all have. They don"t have to agree verbatim with one another. The double tradition: material that matthew and luke share. What is the literary relationship among the gospels. There is a curious pattern of similarities and differences among the synoptics. The verbatim agreement is high enough that suggests some kind of relationship. In purely oral cultures, you wouldn"t get this much verbatim agreement. Because greek is a highly reflective language, you would never find that level of verbatim agreement , and word sequence, in two greek texts unless there is a literary relationship. Point 1: the synoptics display a high degree of verbal agreement either among all three, or between any two. Conclusion 1: a relationship of literary dependence exists between these documents.
