The industrial revolution, french and american revolution, but most importantly was the enlightenment. Core civic ideas and human rights are created. Scientific revolution, explaining things in objective, scientific ways and with rationality, not faith. General disenchantment with religion (christianity, because it was considered the only real religion) Viewed as a tradition and that it was more or less in the past. Enlightenment thinkers were excited to learn about other traditions and shone a negative light upon christianity. Other neglected cultures were found to have a plethora of knowledge in scriptures and ideas on how the world came to be. Voltaire believes confucianism was superior to christianity.
