RLG100 NOTES FROM NOVEMBER 19 2012
LECTURE:
Islam was spread in the Arabian Basin a place where there was no Jewish
influence where the prophet argued for the God of Israel (sent to reestablish the
kingdom)
The people of that time were warriors and the land was ungoverned (Arabian Ode in
L) and they drank camel milk because of the lack of water / believed in
fate/pagan/there was no after life
Makah was pilgrimage town that was not an oasis/a cultic center the Kaaba was
the cube that the pilgrims used to worshiped in the center of Mekah/ where the God
resided (Allah) Makah and the Kaaba looked after by the Quraysh tribe
Quraysh tribe respected because they were great warriors in a time where that
was needed/they were good at war/ they were an old tribe
Muhammad (PBUH) (the Muslim Jesus) born in around 570 CE in Makah as a
Quraysh. He was an orphan and his uncle took care of him. At this time his family
though old and noble were not the wealthy. When he grew up he became a trader,
was good at it, for a wealthy widow who had her eyes on him. The employer sent
her maid to ask him if he would marry her, his family went to meet her and they
married. The wife’s name was Khadija. When they married he was successful but
unhappy as he contemplated and by 40 he had his 1st prophetic experience he
saw a being that was cosmic and he was taken aback. The being impressed on him
and told him “Recite!” he felt unprepared and as it ended he rushed to his wife
who took him to her uncle who told him “if you are telling the truth than Nomos
(law) of David has descended on you.” Thus he became a gentile (Non
Jew/Christian) prophet outside of the realm of Rome. Hard to perceive through the
others point of view as he is not part of the Covenant and Jesus has already left thus
not the Messiah. Soon he starts to have more visions telling him that the people have
to repent/ the is One God/ the people have to convert lest there be chastisement
(complete annihilation of the people) he is their to warn them
Muhammad (PBUH) in Makah he was not successful in converting them one
day he decided to tell the people about his prophecy so he went to the outskirts of
the town and yelled. When the people came he told them and his uncle told him
“Damn you!” He tried harder but when the people asked what would happen to their
ancestors and he told them that the were damned they said they could not convert.
(Could not desert their ancestors) He preached for 10 years teaching:
1. Single God that was the same as the Jews (Lord was the creator and judge
and their was no son or holy spirit)
2. There was resection and judgment (his audience was pagan and they had
no idea of Hell and Heaven)
3. Chastisement: you will be destroyed
However, only a few rich and some of the poor converted with his wife being the
first. He preached for 10 years but failed (610: began/619: Uncle and wife died and
evil uncle comes in that allows the people to kill him for money/ 622: flees to
Medina)
Muhammad (PBUH) in Medina this is where the Muslim calendar starts and is
the first solid date we have of Muhammad (PBUH). Medina was a oasis filled with
pagan and Jews who were fighting and needed and outsider to step in. Thus they
listened to him and he became an arbitrator which was part of the agreement that
they would save him and he would help them. We know this because of his
biography and the Quran. He wrote the Constitution of Medina for them:
1. Formal Treaty /contract to stop fighting
2. Declares the constitution of a new community (Umma nation) based
on faith
3. The community carries the duty of the tribes i.e protect the member and
there will be revenge in case of murder safety guaranteed
4. Any transgression of the perpetrator will be questions you have to give
up the bad person as the law becomes above man
5. Peace to be universal, indivisible authority will impose order
6. Security is of one the body
7. Treaty is an alliance of defense
8. Quraysh is the enemy and no one is to offer the hospitality
9. No one is allowed to break the treaty
10. Muhammad (PBUH) is the arbitrator
11. Jews are also part of the Umma
12. Medina is a holy/shrine city sanctuary
