Document Summary
God promises the land of canaan to abraham, really nowadays israel. The ancient israelites took over this land and came to see that as the land was promised by. God, they came to identify it as their spiritual homeland. The dispossession of this land was a sign of god"s frustration with the jewish people. The times they were evicted from the land due to famine, exile, worshipping of foreign gods etc. Retributive theology: history is interpreted as god"s blessing and in bad times as god"s punishment for the things we fail to do. Most of the things we know about judaism come from the hebrew bible. The first five books contain the major narratives, the book of genesis, exodus, leviticus etc, they"re known as torah (meaning knowledge). The broader meaning refers to the whole bulk of knowledge both written and oral.
