Document Summary

3 sects of judaism after diaspora: sephardim: spain-portugal, spoke ladino (spanish&hebrew) Jesus was a jew and he accepted them. When they refused to convert to christianity, he was angered and started many rumors about the jewish faith. Hasidism: a movement to bring more studies in judaism back to the mystical sense (simpler) In the early 19th c. he eradicated ghettos and encouraged the jews to assimilate into european culture. Many leaders feared that traditions would be lost and culture would be forgotten in assimilation. They discussed, to what degree should we accommodate change? . Moses mendlessohn: decided the judaism needed to assimilate and was an advocate. He translated the bible in to german and encouraged the community to actively participate in. This was at the time of the enlightenment when ideas of philosophy and science were changing drastically. In the 20th c. anti-semitism surfaced, even though many jews were successful in their fields.
