Apocalyptic literature originated in second temple period among ancient. Judeans (c. 200bce) and, later, christians (100ce) visions of the end- of-the-age. G-d is in control, but g-d has temporarily given control to forces of evil. G-d would intervene to destroy forces of evil and usher in his kingdom thus, g-d is ultimately in control. Apocalyptic literature written in times of distress and oppression (real or perceived) protest the present order of things and the power that maintain it. Function: to encourage those who are feeling oppressed to keep the faith. Book of revelation (aka apocalypse of john) Written by john (from asia-minor [modern day turkey]) Every time he breaks a seal a disaster strikes the earth upon the opening of each seal. Breaking of seventh seal brings seven more disasters. Appearance of the first beast (the antichrist?) and his false prophet. Cosmic battle between christ (and his heavenly armies) and the anti- christ.
