Document Summary

Jesus proclaimed the end of history as we know it. Jesus was from a long line of prophets who understood that god was soon going to intervene in the world, overthrow the evil that ran it, and bring in a new kingdom. Not every modern scholar has shared this view of jesus. Many have tried to deny that jesus was an apocalypticist. It is difficult to reconstruct what jesus was really like. The oldest narratives of his life available to us are the four gospels. Prior to enlightenment, those who studies gospels said they recorded actual historical events. Example of the story of how jesus feeds thousands with 5 loaves of bread and two fish; jesus walking on water; his resurrection. Those who see the gospels as supermatural histories say that this was a miraculous event that actually happened. Objective processes of obsevation, empirical verification, logical inference. Many biblical scholars were influenced by the enlightenment.
