Document Summary

30 conservation of species and habitats (ii) islands don"t have to be in the ocean. Wherever you have spatial area where there is a particular type of habitat but is surrounded by something that is not habitat. Fragmentation and isolation: fragmentation usually means habitat degradation. Breaking up of habitat: isolation limits recovery from local extinction. For some species it will be too big of a barrier. Edge habitat is also good for other types of species. When it is fragmented, loss of core area. Affecting quality of habitat and balance of species that live there. Different than the inside of the forest. Sunlight and wind penetrate: drier than interior. Strong effect on survival and persistence of populations in fragmented landscapes. Sometimes small amount of corridor can make a huge difference. Makes it easier for organisms to move amongst fragments. Climatic factors that drive species richness: productivity and predictability. Productivity: increases richness, not just abundance, more competition, more specialization.
