Document Summary

Significant shifts in next couple of centuries. No upwelling off the coast of south america. Coral reefs: great barrier reef big losses. 25% of all marine species economically important tourism: ecosystem services, etc. corals = colonial organisms, related to anemones and jellyfish. Many secrete carbonate exoskeletons; form reefs symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae****not actually algae. Coral reefs are in worldwide decline losses of at least 40% worldwide. Nutrient pollution causes algal growth, smothers coral acidification of oceans removes carbonate ions loss of zooxanthellae = bleaching : symbionts are sensitive to temperature; water levels and chemistry. Blast fishing using explosives to kill or stun fish for collection. Mangrove forests salt-tolerant trees with aerial roots: have roots than can absorb air less oxygen dissolved in water than in air filter pollutants, protect from storm surges; extremely biodiverse, retain sediment and maintains stability of shoreline. 35% lost in 10 year: aquaculture, industry, development. Hotbeds for some species shrimp species live in mangrove forests.
