Document Summary
Systems that combine elements of land and water. Areas of land whose soil is saturated (inundated) permanently, seasonally or tidally: pore spaces full of water, not air, can be permanent or temporary, a lot variation in what pore spaces are doing. May be covered partially or completely by shallow pools of water. Water may be fresh, saline or brackish: brackish water is in between fresh and saline, tends to occur in estuaries. Water has less oxygen than air does. The warmer it is, the less oxygen dissolves: hydric (water saturated, lots of organic matter, oxygen in air is predictable, but not in water because it is temperature dependent, lots of organic matter (doesn"t decompose) Black gooey stuff and rotten egg smell. Nutrients stay there as long as soils are inundated and saturated. Shallow water allows plants to grow above water surface (emergents) Emergent vegetation vegtation growing out of the water.
