ENV200H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Drought Deciduous, Hydrothermal Vent, Estuary
Document Summary
Prediction of biomes are based on temperature and precipitation. Biodiversity: the number and variety of different biological species living in biomes. Lots of biomes that are heavily controlled by temperature are located within latitudinal boundaries. Tropical forests are located in areas close to the equator. Expansive grasslands are located close to the tropics. Many biomes are given their names based on latitudes. Temperature and precipitation changes based on elevation and latitude. Mountains are cooler and wetter in high elevations; opposite applies to low elevations. Temperatures are cooler and precipitation heavier at high elevations found in mountainous regions. Tropical rainforests have abundant rainfall as well as warm to hot temperatures annually. Tropical savannas and grasslands are mostly dry: grasslands: areas with little rainfall to sustain forests, savannas: a type of grassland with sparse tree cover. In deserts, precipitation is rare, with less than 30 cm of rain annually.
