ENV200H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Industrial Revolution, Ocean Current, Oboe
Document Summary
Outline: ozone: tropospheric and stratospheric, global climate change. Effects of ozone depletion: more uv radiation reaches earth, image health problems, more cataracts, more skin cancer, weakened immunity. Chlorine element is able to participate in hundred of reactions, which is able to interfere with the ozone hundreds of times before being removed. Right now thinning ozone is smaller than in the 90"s but it fluctuates. What are some natural forcing mechanisms for climate change: changing solar energy output, continental drift, changes in ocean circulation, variation in distance/angles between earth and the sun, variation in the composition of earth"s structure. Causes of global climate change: greenhouse gases absorb infrared radiation->warms atmosphere, we are increasing concentrations of these gases. Natural & enhanced greenhouse effect: radiative forcing: the imbalance in the earth"s energy budget that results when the amount of energy radiated to outer space is changed through either natural or human increases.
