Renounced all of his fiction except for two short works. Obsessed with answers / secrets of human existence. Fabricated memories of mother - narrating own life. Wrote first novel while in army - childhood Part of a planned series of 4 novels. Childhood recognized as an important part of new russian literature. Wanted it to become model for education of peasants across country. Emancipation of serfs - new social relations, new potential for rural education. Strict ideas about child bearing and child rearing. Overshadowed his own concerns and those of the novel. Cynicism towards new forms of social / political engagement. Participated in civic life to some extent, but was extremely cynical towards the idea of individuals affecting any social change.
