Mikhailov works from soul, cares a lot about what other people think. Life intervening in artistic vision - grease-mark that falls on painting. Vronsky, on the other hand, would not be able to deal with this. Preconceived idea of what he should be painting. Painting of anna is completely unique --> nothing like before/since. Other painting of boys fishing - completely different kind of painting that strikes them. Admires his own painting because it looks like paintings of others, while mikhailov looks completely different. Given up everything to be with each other but only anna has been closed off by society. Italy is safer - society is not as closed off. Levin happy but not in the way he expected. Doesn"t understand why kitty is so obsessed with linens and decorating. Difficulties of putting people together, sacrifices, giving up self-hood. Chain that pulls in 2 directions - 2 individuals. Remainder of novel = how to solve this problem (but insoluble)
